Homemade Sloppy Joes

Sloppy joes are a great and pretty fast, hearty dinner. The seasonings can go a couple of different ways, but here is a basic recipe that does not trend too sweet.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1lb ground beef
  • 1 large diced onion
  • 1 diced red bell pepper
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • Seasonings: salt, pepper, chili powder, paprika

In a large pot, add the beef, onion, bell pepper, garlic, and seasonings. Break up the ground beef as it cooks on a low/medium heat. Cover the pot to allow the onions to soften. When the ground beef is no longer pink and the onion is soft, add the rest of the ingredients and allow it simmer, stirring often. The mixture will begin to caramelize, so take care to not let it burn. When the sauce coats all of the meat and has caramelized nicely, remove from heat and portion onto hamburger buns. You can top with cheddar cheese and French fried onions. Enjoy!

Pro-tip: You can use leftovers to make loaded cheese fries.
