Flour Tortillas

Homemade flour tortillas are lovely and delicious and surprisingly easy to do!

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 5 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 cup warm water

You may have to adjust the amount of flour to make the dough soft but not sticky. Mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl. It does not require kneading, you just need to bring it all together and let it rest in a covered bowl for about 10 minutes.

Next portion the dough into about 12-16 equal pieces and roll them into balls. Let them rest again for 10 minutes.

You can press the tortillas in a tortilla press using 2 parchment rounds as liners and dusting each ball with flour before pressing. If you do not have a tortilla press you can roll our with a rolling pin (might need more flour). Try to get them as thin as possible, as they will shrink up on the griddle.

I actually find that if you are using parchment it’s easier to leave the parchment on one side and put the tortilla on the griddle (dough side down) and allow it to set up a tiny bit before peeling it off and pressing the next one. I recommend using a non-stick griddle pan and cooking each tortilla as soon as it is pressed. They will set up a little bit, then flip and cooking the other side. It should puff a little bit. Cook until both sides are opaque white and slightly speckled with brown spots. Place the cooked tortillas in a paper towel lined tortilla warmer and enjoy with your favorite fillings. They are also delicious with just butter. Yum!
